proper grammar and punctuation
I use correct grammar and punctuation. Always. Even in text messages. Even semi-colons. I use semi-colons in text messages.

i am neurotic

Thank you, I thought the same thing.
I do this as well.
I’m with you… I think my neurosis started when my grandmother would return handwritten letters with red pen on them correcting me.
Steve, I believe that she (or he) is using literary style for emphasis (e.g., “Out in the dark yard, working in the lantern light, Pa and Al loaded the truck. Tools on the bottom, but handy to reach in case of a breakdown. Boxes of clothes next, and kitchen utensils in a gunnysack; cutlery and dishes in their box. Then the gallon bucket tied on behind. They made the bottom of the load as even as possible, and filled the spaces between boxes with rolled blankets.” (John Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath)) Notice that Mr. Steinbeck also uses periods to mark his incomplete sentences.
I think I love you.
I’m the same way. Although my online internet vocab has grown to include (and accept!) abbreviations like “lol”, “brb”, “afk”, etc., I still feel compelled to type everything out as best as I can, even if it takes me longer.
I no longer correct other people and their spelling or grammar, but it irks me to see how some people type online nowadays. I’m only 31, so it’s not like I’m some old teacher online irked at the shortcuts either
Of course, there should be a semi-colon between the phrase ‘Even semi-colons’ and ‘I use semi-colons in text messages’.
Just trying to be helpful.
Michele: Literary style is fine and good, and I have no problem with that, but my point is still valid. The author of this post did not use proper grammar when stating that s/he *always* uses proper grammar. It’s like saying I never post messages on web pages– I just did. I guess I would classify it as ironic.
I completely agree. I just think sending someone a text full of abbreviations and ‘lol-speak’ makes me seem less intelligent, even if the recipient knows me well. I always include apostrophes and any use correct grammar and punctuation. It always takes longer to type out the message, so this is probably the reason I don’t text much in the first place.
I personally would’ve thrown a colon after “Even semi-colons”.
“Even semi-colons: I use semi-colons in text messages.”
Also acceptable: The giant dash!
“Even semi-colons—I use semi-colons in text messages.”
Of course, however, according to Lynne Truss, this should be used in mid-sentence digressions, but Emily Dickinson had that shit mastered! BOOYAH!
(Does “booyah” require a hyphen?)
You’re not alone. I’m the only person I know who does this, but I even get annoyed when I receive text messages in “i.m”.
I do too, and I cringe when someone uses “txt tlk” when we’re conversing. It’s mind-numbing.

Me too.
I use correct grammar and punctuation as well. When I started Instant Messaging my friends, I thought it would be a great way to get my words per minute and accuracy to go up. However, I don’t know why I do it for text messages.
Really? Even though your post has three incomplete sentences, I’m to believe you always use correct grammar?
I thought the same thing, Steve.
Wow. I posted this as a comment on a different post earlier…Awesome!
I don’t care if I’m a year late. I just have to comment on this. You know what? You and I could be like, best friends. I don’t even know you. I need a high-five.
