verbal check
I saw the home security post, and had to post my version. Before I can leave my house I do what I term my “crazy check”. I must walk through my entire house checking each room and verbalizing aloud that it is “OK”. The worst room is the kitchen, which always gets checked twice. I will walk through, pointing at items such as the stove and saying “Stove off” or an ashtray saying “No cigarettes burning”. Once this is done, I will walk out, lock the door, push it three – five times, and then FINALLY decide it is safe to leave. Yes, that sounds like OCD, but it is my personal glitch.

it doesn’t just sound like OCD, it is OCD. if this starts to disprupt your life or make you late for everything you must seek help. best wishes to you!
I have that exact same “glitch”. Sometimes I wonder if other people beside my unit think I’m crazy for pushing the door too much after I lock it.
I am similar … not necessarily about the rooms, but the doors. I have to lock, unlock, attempt to open, attempt to unlock the door several times before I am sure it is safe. And if I get in the car and still have a “feeling” I will get out and go check it again.
Ummmm….did I write this post? I “clear” each room and the kitchen definitely gets checked more than once (also saying out loud that the stove is off and sometimes taking a picture with my phone to “prove” it). I also check the door multiple times to make sure it’s locked when I leave. I find that it’s worse when either my house is cluttered or I’m going to be gone for a long time (like out of town for the weekend). For me it’s not as bad if I’m with other people (thank goodness). How strange that we have such similar practices….
i can totally understand this particular (though quite mild) version of O.C.D. – because i am her husband. what’s worse – it’s communicable. i actually go through the house as well now, and tell her which rooms and ashtrays i checked. (she always goes behind me anyway, though, as i am not always the best judge of whether a cigarette is actually out or not. our carpet can attest to that.) i love her unconditionally, though – with, without, or sometimes even for her foibles.
